If I am going to survive as a headshot photographer, I have to be substantially different and better than my competition.  I am constantly refining my repertoire and skills.  Over the years, I have refined my techniques in lighting, retouching, composition, editing and marketing. Every so often, I wonder what my next great epiphany will be. 

Innovate or die is unavoidable. Unfortunately, other douche bag photographers will copy your products, and the nomenclature on your web site.  Their impact is likely insignificant but irritating nonetheless.  I spend a great deal of time concocting content to gain a competitive advantage only to have it copied verbatim by some idiot. Fortunately, the imitators don't understand the big picture behind what I do, so they lack the ability to copy the idea with soul… still knock-offs are a bitch.       

So today, I am introducing headshots targeted to people who want cool Social Media profiles.  Forget the polished LinkedIn headshot; these portraits are for dudes who want cool pics for Google+, Facebook, or whatever. One Light, Meausured Exposure And A Great Toronto Headshot Photographer

Going back to the basics, the other day I shot a Client with a single light... See below, the results were (in my humble opinion) great.

Photographers often get complicated in over lighting their subject.  The net result is a lack of shadows that add dimension to the subject. 


Shadows on a headshot are great; they can accentuate curves on the subject to make them more visually pleasing.

Arguably, perhaps a second fill light could have been used here to fill light under the brow- but I ain't signing the blues... I like this image and so did the customer.

Next time you are producing the your headshots- try a little less light to add dimension and drama to your subject's face.

Headshot Photography does not have to get complicated. A single strobe light properly diffused can produce great results.

I am a Toronto headshot photographer and one of the things I like doing is taking photos of my Client’s portraits by the window.  Why?  It looks cool and my competitors often don't know how to take this shot without blowing out background.  The trick: measure the light inside to match the light intensity outside. 

 

A key benefit to measuring the light when I shoot is that I produce accurate skin tones.  Colours do not require heavy Photoshop corrections later in postproduction.
